Joan Miró Biography:
Joan Miró Biography:
Joan Miró (1893-1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and ceramicist born in Barcelona. Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealist, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, and a re-creation of the childlike. In numerous interviews, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods, deriding them as tools which support a bourgeois society. He infamously promoted the "assassination of painting" and challenged the traditional visual elements of the medium.
In 1931, Pierre Matisse opened his gallery in New York City, bringing with him the avant-garde canvases by Miró. Miró's work would have a profound impact on the American art world over the coming years, particularly on the Abstract Expressionists living in New York, including Motherwell, Calder, Gorky, Matta, Pollock, and Rothko. Miró’s lyrical abstractions and color field paintings were precursors to works created by Helen Frankenthaler, Sam Francis, and others.
Miró received, major restrospectives in New York (1972), London (1972), Saint-Paul-de-Vence (1973), and Paris (1974) towards the end of his life, which further cemented his international acclaim and reputation. Two museums dedicated to his work in Spain were established, The Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona and The Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró in Palma de Mallorca.
